Of Mice and Men, the classic 1940 Lewis Milestone Depression era best-friends-trying-to-make-enough-to-live-a-good-life adventure melodrama ("Hollywood said it could never be made but now it's on the screen"; "I'm Lennie... I didn't mean to do no bad thing."; "I'm George... I always knowed Lennie would get us into a mess... A bad mess."; "I'm Mae... I'm straight, I tell you... Nobody's got no right to call me names."; "Sure I got a husband! He ain't never home. I got nobody to talk to... I got nobody to be with... I want to see somebody... Just see 'em and talk to 'em. I come from a nice home. I was brung up by nice people. I'm straight, I tell you. Nobody's Got No Right To Call Me Names!"; "The picture Hollywood said could never be made!"; "A mighty novel! A sensational stage success! Now! The year's most important picture!"; "A novel by John Steinbeck author of 'Grapes of Wrath'"; produced by Hal Roach; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Burgess Meredith (as George), Betty Field (as Curly's wife, Mae), Lon Chaney Jr. (as Lennie), Bob Steele (as Curly), Charles Bickford, and Roman Bohnen

Important Added Info: Note that this poster is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before (and we have also never auctioned the first release studio-issued insert either)! This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had an extra horizontal fold 1/2" above and below the regular top and bottom folds. There was separation and fine surface paper loss on parts of the folds. There was a faint vertical scuff mark running from Chaney's collar down through the left of Meredith's hat and missing his face. There was slight darkening on the bottom horizontal fold, which runs through Meredith's nose and cheek. There were creases, small tears, and tiny paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
