An Original 1948 (from the first release of this movie in Japan) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Two-Sided Japanese "B3" or "Nakazuri" Movie Poster (14x20; measures 14" x 20" [36 x 51 cm]) (Learn More) The Life of Emile Zola, the 1937 William Dieterle (this is one of five biographical movies Dieterle directed for Warner Bros; nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) biography melodrama (about the life of the famous French writer; from the book 'Zola and His Time' by Matthew Josephson; "Story by Heinz Herald and Geza Herczeg"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Paul Muni (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Emile Zola), Gale Sondergaard (as Lucie Dreyfus), Joseph Schildkraut (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Alfred Dreyfus), Gloria Holden (as Alexandrine Zola), Donald Crisp, Erin O'Brien Moore, Henry O'Neill, Morris Carnovsky, Louis Calhern, and Robert Barrat (as Major Walsin-Esterhazy). Note that as usual, Paul Muni wanted to appear like the actual Emile Zola, so he played the part with a beard, and for the parts of the movie where Zola is older, he had white hair and glasses. Naturally, Warner Bros. did not think that an image of him in makeup would be helpful to attract moviegoers, so on some of the advertising, they used an image of young, handsome Paul Muni out of makeup, even though he never appears like that in the movie! Important Added Info: Note that, immediately after World War II, the U.S. occupied Japan and part of Germany, and many American movies were shown in both countries between 1945 and the end of the occupation. Most of the Japanese posters we have seen from that period and many of the German posters and programs from the same period have a "Motion Picture Export Association" circular printed logo on the poster or program, and apparently this was a program run in conjunction with the U.S. government. Since there were many U.S. servicemen in Japan and Germany at this time, many of these posters and programs have the title written in both Japanese (or German) and in English, and they are from the first release of that movie in that country. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfold and some tiny creases and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the foldlines. It had some tiny tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but the restorer painted over all of the solid background areas, to "even them out". Also, the poster was slightly roughly handled after it was backed, and there is now a faint partial horizontal crease in the top right, both in the poster itself and in the linen, but it is not very noticeable.
