the 1930s Japanese magazine advertisement of Secret Agent (released in France as "Agent Secret"), the 1936 Alfred Hitchcock English World War I (WWI) romantic spy espionage suspense thriller ("Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, of 'The 39 Steps' fame"; "A lady-killer.. charming and fascinating. And a killer... ruthless and merciless. Burning a flaming trail of mystery, intrigue and romance... among the gay capitals of Europe"; "Based on the novel 'Ashenden' by W. Somerset Maugham"; "From the play by Campbell Dixon"; about an English spy in World War I who is stationed in Switzerland to try to capture a notorious German spy, and he is aided by a beautiful woman posing as his wife, and by a mysterious assassin, played by Peter Lorre) starring Madeleine Carroll, Peter Lorre, John Gielgud, Robert Young, Percy Marmont, Florence Kahn ("as Mrs. Max Beerbohm"), Charles Carson, and Lilli Palmer AND Friday the Thirteenth, the 1933 (released in the U.S. in 1934) Victor Saville English superstition comedy melodrama starring Jessie Matthews, Edmund Gwenn, Gordon Harker, Sonnie Hale, and Muriel Aked AND Journey's End, the 1930 James Whale English/U.S. World War I (WWI) military melodrama ("The greatest screen drama of all time"; "An All-Talking Tiffany Production"; "From the play by R.C. Sherriff"; the writer of the movie, R.C. Sherriff, had been a soldier in World War I, and he wanted to truthfully depict the psychological horrors of serving in war, and he did so successfully in his screenplay for this movie, which had top actors) starring Colin Clive ("by special permission of Maurice Browne, Ltd"), Ian Maclaren, Anthony Bushell, David Manners, Charles Gerrard, Thomas Whitley, and Billy Bevan (one of the better Charlie Chaplin imitators of the time). Note that it was the success of this movie that would raise James Whale's profile and get him signed to Universal, and get him the directing assignment on the following year's "Frankenstein" (and he cast Colin Clive, whom he had worked with on this movie).
