An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Romanian Movie Poster (measures 28" x 39") (Learn More)

Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the classic 1939 William Dieterle romantic love triangle horror melodrama ("Ten times a thousand thrills!"; "BIG beyond words! ...Wondrous beyond belief! ...Magnificent beyond compare!"; adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo) starring Charles Laughton (in the title role as Quasimodo, the hunchback), Cedric Hardwicke (billed as "Sir Cedric Hardwicke"; as Frollo), Thomas Mitchell, Maureen O'Hara (as Esmerelda), Edmond O'Brien (as Gringoire, the poet), Alan Marshal, Walter Hampden, Katharine Alexander, Harry Davenport, Helene Whitney, Katherine Alexander, George Zucco, Fritz Leiber, Etienne Girardot, Minna Gombell, Arthur Hohl, George Tobias, Rod La Rocque, and Spencer Charters. Note that this was a wonderful sound remake of the classic 1923 silent movie starring Lon Chaney Sr. and Patsy Ruth Miller in the lead roles.

Important Added Info: Note that I have never seen a poster quite like this one! It is clearly a printed poster, and has a Romanian distributor logo in the bottom right corner, but the white writing in the poster looks as if it was stenciled on to the poster, and in fact it is chipping and fading, as though it was added after printing. The surface of the poster is glossy, almost as though it were sprayed with something at one time. Note that the poster has no borders, and that there is paper loss in the bottom left corner. It appears likely to me that it originally had blank borders on all four sides, and that they were trimmed off. If anyone can confirm or deny any of the above, or has more information about this poster, please contact me and I will post it here. This Romanian poster measures 28" x 39".

Condition: good. This poster was linenbacked, but it was either NOT linenbacked by a very talented restorer, OR it was linenbacked many years ago, and has received rough handling over the years, OR it had fairly significant defects that were not well restored. If it was restored, you can clearly see signs of the restoration even from a distance. This is a poster that would surely benefit from additional professional restoration. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!).

The poster had creases, tears, and areas of paper loss on the foldlines and the poster was roughly handled after backing and there is a 14" crease across the middle left of the image, in both the poster and the linen beneath it. There were areas of paper loss in the top 1/4 of the vertical foldline. There were water stains in the lower left of the poster. There was a triangular area of paper loss in the left corners and a semi-circular area of paper loss in the right corner. The surface of the poster is glossy, and it seems as though that glossiness is not part of the original poster, but perhaps was sprayed on as a preservative. Please do not bid on this poster unless you have read the above and also read our other information poster directly after our description of the movie!
