Here's what makes them tick... What makes them tough... What makes them tremble... What makes them Take a Giant Step"; "From Playground to hunting ground in a bar!"; "The gang-and the out-siders who can't get in"; "The explosions in the class rooms!"; "The very frank... very honest story of the youths who search for their manhood-in all the wrong places!"; "This is Spence Scott... A boy with a man-sized hunger... aching to hold a woman for the first time!"; "So much guts... So much greatness... So far ahead of all the other films you've seen!"; "Based on original play by Louis S. Peterson"; about the difficulties of a black African American family with a teenage son) starring Johnny Nash, Estelle Hemsley, Ruby Dee, Frederick O'Neal, and Ellen Holly. Note that this movie was produced by Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, which was Burt Lancaster's production company, and was one more of their many efforts to bring public attention to unpopular and "difficult" issues, in this case, how hard it was at that time for a black family to survive and raise their children to be responsible adults. Largely forgotten today, this movie was groundbreaking in its day for its ultra-realistic portrayal of a "typical" black family, and the difficulties it faced on a day-to-day basis.
