Date Sold 5/26/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie 8 1/4" x 11" [21 x 28 cm] Key Book Still (Learn More) Crime and Punishment, the classic 1935 Josef von Sternberg psychological detective crime murder mystery melodrama ("Dostoievsky's [sic] immortal novel of human passions"; "The most powerful drama of modern times!"; "A superb drama of human emotions takes its place among the greatest!"; based on the classic novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky; about a brilliant but poor man who commits a murder, and he seems to get away with it, but there is a police inspector who suspects) starring Edward Arnold (as Inspector Porfiry), Peter Lorre (as Raskolnikov), Marian Marsh (as Sonya), Tala Birell, Robert Allen, Douglass Dumbrille, and Stella Campbell (billed as "Mrs. Patrick Campbell", as the creepy pawnbroker). Note that the name Stella Campbell might not be familiar to you, but in 1914, George Bernard Shaw wrote the play "Pygmalion" specifically with her in mind, and she played the lead in the first stage production, even though she was 49 at the time. She was a Hollywood legend for her wildly inappropriate remarks, often directed at famous and important people in public! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that the snipe on this cool candid notes that Peter Lorre was in virtually every scene of this classic movie, and that made him so exhausted that he could take a nap anywhere, including while he was being shaved between scenes! Note that this still is a key book still, printed on a deluxe heavyweight paper stock. Many studios spent extra money to have their most special photos, the key book stills, either backed with linen or printed on a heavy paper, both of which enhanced their durability. They had an extra 1" at the left or top, with punch holes, because of how they were stored. Key book stills are far more rare than regular stills, which has increased their popularity among collectors, since only a few keybooks were manufactured per film, and a key book still is guaranteed to be authentic. Condition: very good. This key book still has two punch holes in the top background area. It also had two in the bottom excess border area, but someone roughly removed it from the key book, causing paper loss in that blank area. Otherwise, the still is in nice condition!
