Date Sold 2/18/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Jumbo Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Scarlet Pimpernel, the 1934 (released in the U.S. in 1935) Harold Young English historical French Revolution romantic disguised hero adventure comedy ("The Scarlet Pimpernel who was he... what was his strange power?"; produced by Alexander Korda) starring Leslie Howard (in the title role as Sir Percy Blakeney/The Scarlet Pimpernel), Merle Oberon, Raymond Massey, Nigel Bruce, Bramwell Fletcher, and Anthony Bushell. Note that this movie was based on the 1905 book by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, and the lead character is a "mild-mannered" English aristocrat by day, who by night poses as "The Scarlet Pimpernel", a dashing hero who rescues victims of the French Revolution, and not even his wife knows his "secret identity"! It seems quite likely that Joe Simon and Jerry Schuster at least partly based their Superman character on this character, given the huge similarities between them (except the Scarlet Pimpernel had no super powers!). Important Added Info: Note that this poster was printed by a local poster company (likely the "Globe Poster Corp." of Chicago, but the bottom of the card, where the printing company's information would be listed, is missing, so we can't say for certain). In the 1930s, a constant headache for theaters was being sure of having movie posters for their current releases. Often, the posters would travel with the actual film prints, and sometimes the theater before them might have forgotten to include the poster, it might have been defaced or torn, etc. If a theater didn't have posters, it was very frustrating! Several companies began in the 1930s (Leader Press, the "other company", Woolever Press, The Globe Poster Corp., etc) that made posters of their own for new releases, and they would provide a back up for theaters in case they didn't get a studio issued poster. In the case of the company that printed this card (likely the Globe Poster Corp.), they also made jumbo window cards! It is an absolute fact that posters from these companies are far more rare than the regular studio issued posters. It is also a certainty that these posters were issued when the movies were first released. Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. If it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube (like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. Condition: fair. The poster is fragile and there are tears and areas of paper loss around the edges (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
