An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" [27 x 39 cm]; 24 pages) (Learn More) Fires of Faith, the 1919 Edward Jose silent World War I (WWI) Salvation Army romantic love triangle melodrama (based on the story by Charles E. Whittaker; about a farm girl who is raped and goes to New York City, where she lives in the Bowery; at the same time, a wealthy young man and his fiancee mock the Salvation Army, not realizing all the good it does; after many coincidences, the farm girl ends up a Salvation Army nurse in France in World War I, where the wealthy man is now a pilot, and he is injured, and she nurses him back to health, but surprisingly, they DON'T fall in love, but both end up happily with their respective mates) starring Catherine Calvert, Eugene O'Brien, Rubye De Remer (billed as "Ruby de Remer"), Helen Dunbar, Theodore Roberts, Charles Olge, and Evangeline Booth (billed as "Showing Commander Evangeline Booth in authentic scenes of Salvation Army activities"; Booth was the daughter of the couple who founded what was then called "The Christian Mission", but which became the Salvation Army in 1878, and Booth would eventually be elected as the Salvation Army's first female General!). Note that this movie was basically an "infomercial" for the Salvation Army, telling of all the good it did during World War I and at other times, and a fictional story was added to it to keep the audience's attention! Also, this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that there are TWO different pressbooks for this movie! They are very similar in some respects (same number of pages, showing the same posters, etc.), but they have completely different cover images, and one has added credits about the head of the Salvation Army, Evangeline Booth, and there are stories about her and the Salvation Army in that pressbook in place of stories about the stars of the movie. The most likely explanation for this is that Paramount created the "Salvation Army" version pressbook for distribution to Salvation Army people, who likely arranged for private showings of this movie at Salvation Army locations, but that is just a guess. THE PRESSBOOK IN THIS AUCTION IS THE ONE THAT HAS REGULAR COVER AND REGULAR INFORMATION ABOUT THE MOVIE! Note that this is one of a remarkable group of 21 silent Paramount pressbooks that were in a bound volume. Each was carefully removed, so there is slight paper loss at the spine (and likely the other three borders were slightly trimmed to make them even, but only blank border areas were affected), and otherwise, the pressbooks are in really nice condition (and of course, the chances of finding these in any condition are very slim!). We are auctioning all 21 of these, in 21 separate auctions. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: fair to good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was removed from a bound volume (see above). There was some snipe or label glued over the right of the image on the cover, and it was removed, causing surface paper loss in that area. The covers have a brown "burn" mark in the upper right blank border area, but the interior pages only have slight discoloration in that area (see our images). There are smudges in the white areas of the cover. The pages are not at all fragile. Learn More about condition grades
