An Original Vintage Paperbacked Movie Trade Ad (measures 12 1/4" x 26 1/4" [31 x 67 cm]) (Learn More) Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the classic 1939 William Dieterle romantic love triangle horror melodrama ("Ten times a thousand thrills!"; "BIG beyond words! ...Wondrous beyond belief! ...Magnificent beyond compare!"; adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo) starring Charles Laughton (in the title role as Quasimodo, the hunchback), Cedric Hardwicke (billed as "Sir Cedric Hardwicke"; as Frollo), Thomas Mitchell, Maureen O'Hara (as Esmerelda), Edmond O'Brien (as Gringoire, the poet), Alan Marshal, Walter Hampden, Katharine Alexander, Harry Davenport, Helene Whitney, Katherine Alexander, George Zucco, Fritz Leiber, Etienne Girardot, Minna Gombell, Arthur Hohl, George Tobias, Rod La Rocque, and Spencer Charters. Note that this was a wonderful sound remake of the classic 1923 silent movie starring Lon Chaney Sr. and Patsy Ruth Miller in the lead roles. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: From the 1920s on, studios would create elaborate trade ads, often in full color, and often using the finest artists of the day. They would run these ads in their studio yearbooks and exhibitor magazines, and they would also print those trade ads separately and mail them individually to theater owners, trying to get them to book that specific movie. Sometimes those books and magazines are separated and the ads, which now greatly resemble the individually printed trade ads, are sold individually. The trade ad offered here was removed from Motion Picture Herald magazine from December 16, 1939. We auctioned another example of this trade ad, and that one was not backed, so we were able to look at the back of it, and it told about the movie and it had a tagline pointing to the inside that says "and! Look at the three-sheet sample of the kind of paper available!" So this IS an original 1939 special poster for this classic movie, and it absolutely can be framed and displayed! Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a somewhat thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would likely damage it, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). It will need to be sent in a large flat package which measures approximately 14" x 28", so bear this shipping cost in mind before placing a bid on this poster. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the trade ad had minor wear on the folds and around the edges. Overall, the trade ad was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The trade ad was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
