eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 8z063 JUAREZ local theater jumbo WC '39 Paul Muni & Bette Davis as they looked in Bordertown! Date Sold 8/4/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Jumbo Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 17" x 26" [43 x 66 cm]) (Learn More) Juarez ("WAR-EZZ"), the 1939 William Dieterle (this is one of five biographical movies Dieterle directed for Warner Bros) historical Mexico romantic biographical melodrama ("The screen's greatest triumph"; "Based on the play by Franz Werfel and the novel 'The Phantom Crown' by Bertita Harding"; about Mexican President Benito Juarez, and his leading the Mexican Revolution from Spain) starring Paul Muni (in the title role as Benito Juarez), Bette Davis (as Empress Carlota von Hapsburg), Brian Aherne (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Emperor Maximilian von Hapsburg), Claude Rains (as Emperor Louis Napoleon III), John Garfield (as Porfirio Diaz; in his fourth movie role!), Donald Crisp, Gale Sondergaard, Gilbert Roland, and Henry O'Neill. Note that this movie primarily focuses on the doomed romance of Maximilian and Carlotta, who were sent by Napoleon to rule Mexico, but because Paul Muni had a contract with Warner Bros that said that his character's name had to be in the title of the movie, the movie was called "Juarez" (and because Jack Warner was afraid that people would mispronounce this "strange" name, he had them add "WAR-EZZ" under the title to some posters!). Also note that Warner Bros cast then-red-hot young actor John Garfield in this movie, and they had him playing a Mexican general, even though he was only 26 and had a strong Brooklyn accent! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that Paul Muni wore heavy makeup and a beard in this movie, but the designers of this local theater jumbo window card chose instead to use an image of him as he looked in Bordertown in 1934, and billed Bette Davis equal to him, thus completely distorting what the movie was like and what it was about! Also note that this 17" x 26" local theater window card was created by the Globe Poster Company of Chicago, Illinois when the movie first came out. It is on similar paper stock to the regular jumbo window cards that were created at this time, but they were created for a specific theater. Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. Some of these items can ONLY be sent in flat packages, and could not possibly be rolled into a tube. On some of them (for example f it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube, like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. Condition: fair. There is water staining in the left of the card, including in Muni's face. There is water staining down the right edge, with paper loss in the bottom right corner, and some other border defects. Obviously, this poster can be restored, but bear in mind its condition and the cost of restoration before placing a bid. Learn More about condition grades
