An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Meloy Bros. Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 39 1/4" x 59 1/4" [100 x 150 cm]) (Learn More)

Wife Vs. Secretary, the 1936 Clarence Brown romantic love misunderstanding comedy (about a happily married couple; the husband has a beautiful secretary, and the wife misunderstands something that happens and she thinks that her husband might be having an affair) starring Clark Gable, Jean Harlow (in the title role as the secretary, Helen Wilson), Myrna Loy (in the title role as the wife, Linda Stanhope), May Robson, George Barbier, James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart; in his fourth movie role!), Hobart Cavanaugh, and John Qualen. Note that Jean Harlow plays Clark Gable's secretary, and in the movie, he is madly in love with wife Myrna Loy, and it is only a misunderstanding that causes Loy to think there is something between Gable and Harlow, and the entire movie is very innocent. Note too that Harlow's boyfriend is played by an extremely young Jimmy Stewart!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this style of Meloy Bros 40x60, and that was 13 years ago, when it sold for $1,235! However, that poster was mounted to a very heavy board, and therefore had to be sent to the winning bidder in a very large flat package. But the owner of this poster did something very special with it! When he acquired it, it was on a heavy board (it might have been one of the three we previously auctioned), and he gave it to an expert restorer, who removed it from the heavy board and linenbacked it, which means that it can now be rolled and sent in a tube that measures 42" long. This also allowed the restorer to perform restoration to the poster, so it displays really well, which gives it a big plus over the ones on a heavy board! WE HAD TWO OTHER MELOY BROS POSTERS FROM THIS SAME CONSIGNOR THAT WERE ALSO LINENBACKED, AND THEY SOLD FOR $3,037 AND $550. He had two others linenbacked, but no more, and we are auctioning them in two separate auctions, so this is the last chance to get one of these posters that has been fully restored and linenbacked.

Please click on this link to read more about Meloy Bros. posters (but keep in mind that this version is linenbacked and NOT on a heavy board as mentioned in the link).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, when the poster was created, it was mounted on a heavy board. Someone removed that board and then mounted it onto linen, but otherwise did very little restoration. There were some creases and scuffs scattered throughout, including in the stars' faces and figures, and many creases in the bottom area below the title. The area with the title and credits had been hand painted on, and that was preserved. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. When you look at the poster from inches away, you can clearly see the defects it had and has, but from any reasonable viewing distance, it displays pretty well, but bear the above in mind before bidding on this cool poster.
