Date Sold 4/10/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/2" x 8" [14 x 20 cm]; 246 pages) (Learn More) The Last of the Mohicans, the 1920 Clarence Brown & Maurice Tourneur silent French and Native American Indian War historical action melodrama (based on the novel by James Fenimore Cooper; about two sisters who are daughters of a British officer who are separated from the English and attempt to get back, but must evade the French, and they are greatly helped by Native American Indians and their white ally, Natty Bumpo, who is known as "Hawkeye") starring Wallace Beery (as Magua), Barbara Bedford (as Cora Munro), Alan Roscoe (as Uncas), Lillian Hall (as Alice Munro), Harry Lorraine (as Hawkeye/Natty Bumpo), Theodore Lorch (as Chingachgook), James Gordon (as Colonel Munro), and Boris Karloff. Boris was apparently an uncredited Native American Indian extra. Some say Bela Lugosi might also have been in this film but it seems unlikely because he starred as Chingachgook in two German films that same year (which could explain how the rumor was started). Note that this much loved novel was made into a movie many, many times. There had been three short versions before this one, but this was the first feature length version (there was a German version made the same year). If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is the first Renard photoplay edition from 1925 in its original dust jacket. In our 26 years of auctioning, we have previously auctioned around a dozen hardcover movie edition books (most from Grosset & Dunlap). Now, we have been consigned an amazing collection of 37 hardcover movie edition books, and we are auctioning all of them in this set of auctions! All of them have the original dust jackets, and since we know that the condition of the dust jackets are very important on the value of these, we have photographed the entire dust jacket opened up (both sides), which will surely let you accurately gauge the condition of each book! Here are some more details about these books: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies (there were also some by other publishers, but Grosset & Dunlap printed the lion's share of these). They would re-publish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and they are quite collectible, especially if they still have the original dust jacket! Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. As noted above, we have also pictured the dust jacket entirely opened and we have pictured the inside of the entire dust jacket, since we know collectors value that jacket and want to see its exact condition. Condition: good to very good. The dust jacket is in a protective plastic sleeve. We have pictured the dust jacket entirely opened and we have pictured the inside of the entire dust jacket. We have also pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads, all of which should greatly help you judge the exact condition of this book!
