What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had two circular areas of paper loss in the top right, one affecting an entire eye of the man and another affecting the top of his ear and the background next to it. There was also large paper loss in the girl's neck, entering her chin and the shoulder of the man next to her. There was also large paper loss in the top of the coat of the man at right, affecting his bow tie. There were areas of paper loss in the bottom of that man's coat and paper loss at the end of Lasky's credit and at the end of Abeles' credit. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. A very talented restorer with real artistic skills recreated all of the above large missing areas, and did so so well that it is not very apparent at all, and you need to look closely at the poster to realize the extent of the restoration. This is almost certainly the only surviving example of this poster, so while one would prefer a far better condition example, it "is what it is", and it is likely the only choice. But it truly will display well on the new owner's wall (see our super-sized image).
