Date Sold 4/2/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Mortal Storm, the 1940 Frank Borzage pre-war World War II (WWII) anti-Nazi thriller ("The most exciting picture!"; "The Novel by Phyllis Bottome"; about a professor, his daughter, and her boyfriend in an unnamed European country that is seeing the rise of a fascist group that is taking over the country, and their courageous attempts to both speak out against it and to escape) starring Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Robert Young, Frank Morgan, Robert Stack, Bonita Granville, Irene Rich, Maria Ouspenskaya, William T. Orr, and Gene Reynolds. Note that MGM somewhat courageously made this anti-Nazi movie before the U.S. entered World War II, but they were successfully exporting all of their movies to Germany, and so they attempted to appease Adolf Hitler by not mentioning the Nazis by name, and not identifying the persecuted families in the movie as being Jewish, but that attempt failed, and after this movie was released, Hitler banned MGM movies from Germany! This episode is especially ironic, because in the movie, James Stewart's and Frank Morgan's characters courageously stand up against the Nazis and speak out, even though it means almost certain death, and yet, MGM could not find the same courage as their fictional characters (and meanwhile, over at Warner Bros., they were courageously making anti-Nazi movies like Confessions of a Nazi Spy, made a year earlier!). Important Added Info: Note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. We are doing something in this set of auctions we rarely do! A couple of years ago, we were approached by a very long time collector, and he asked us if he could give us an entire auction of single lobby cards by himself. We agreed, and held that auction in 2017, and later that same year, a different collector sent us a different group of 999 lobby cards and we repeated the process. Now we have a third such "single owner" collection. This one was originally assembled in Australia, which is why some of the cards have either Australian paper snipes attached or Australian ratings stamps (but many do not have them). This collection originally contained 1,100 cards, and we auctioned 100 of them in our March Major Auction, and now we are auctioning the remaining 999 in THIS set of auctions, and after this auction, there will be no more cards to be offered. As will immediately be evident when you look at the cards, many of them are from titles where you almost never see any lobby cards, so this is a rare opportunity to acquire many cards that almost never are offered for sale or at auction! Condition: fair. There are many tape stains and masking tape around the edges of the front and back of the card. There is a black line drawn around the title and many scuffs scattered throughout the image. See our super-sized images to get a good sense of the condition of this card. Please do not bid on this card unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored. Learn More about condition grades
