Maria Ouspenskaya was a Russian actress from the 1910s to the 1940s. She was a stage actress in Russia until the early 1920s, when she defected to the U.S. She began studying under the legendary Stanislavski, the father of "method" acting. She founded the School of Dramatic Art in New York in 1929. In order to keep her school going, she took a part in Dodsworth in 1936 and was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award, and she appeared in several other Hollywood movies, most notably "The Wolf Man" in 1941. She passed away in 1949 at the age of 73.
