What Price Hollywood?, the classic 1932 George Cukor Los Angeles California movie making acting fame romantic love triangle melodrama ("Branded with headlines and sold to the crowd"; "Drama that rips the veil from life behind the screen..."; a Ross Hunter-like movie, about a waitress at the Brown Derby in Hollywood who meets a director, and gets him to give her a walk on part in his next movie after they spend the night together; she becomes a big star and marries a rich man, and the director becomes an alcoholic and is run out of the business; he causes the actress to break up with her husband while she is pregnant, and he regrets what he did and commits suicide, and the scandal ruins her career, and she goes to France with her son, and later, her rich husband tracks her down and they are reunited, and she resumes her career) starring Constance Bennett, Lowell Sherman, Neil Hamilton, Gregory Ratoff, and Brooks Benedict. Note that the plot of this film is very similar to A Star is Born. Also, there has been much speculation about what inspired this movie, and specifically who was the model for the doomed director. Some say that he was modeled after Lowell Sherman himself, who was known to be an alcoholic, as well as silent film director Marshall Neilan, actor John Bowers, and actor John Barrymore (who was Sherman's brother-in-law at the time). The wedding in the movie satirized the elaborate 1927 nuptials of Vilma Banky and Rod La Roque.
