An Original Vintage Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh) (Learn More)

The Life of Emile Zola, the 1937 William Dieterle (this is one of five biographical movies Dieterle directed for Warner Bros; nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) biography melodrama (about the life of the famous French writer; from the book 'Zola and His Time' by Matthew Josephson; "Story by Heinz Herald and Geza Herczeg"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Paul Muni (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Emile Zola), Gale Sondergaard (as Lucie Dreyfus), Joseph Schildkraut (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Alfred Dreyfus), Gloria Holden (as Alexandrine Zola), Donald Crisp, Erin O'Brien Moore, Henry O'Neill, Morris Carnovsky, Louis Calhern, and Robert Barrat (as Major Walsin-Esterhazy). Note that as usual, Paul Muni wanted to appear like the actual Emile Zola, so he played the part with a beard, and for the parts of the movie where Zola is older, he had white hair and glasses. Naturally, Warner Bros. did not think that an image of him in makeup would be helpful to attract moviegoers, so on some of the advertising, they used an image of young, handsome Paul Muni out of makeup, even though he never appears like that in the movie!
