An Original Vintage Movie Souvenir Program Book (measures 9" x 12" [23 x 30 cm]; 20 pages) (Learn More) Rogue Song, the 1930 Lionel Barrymore romantic musical ("All Talking"; "Based on the operetta 'Gypsy Love' by Franz Lehar") starring Lawrence Tibett (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; billed as "Lawrence Tibbett of the Metropolitan Opera House in The Rogue Song"), Catherine Dale Owen, Nance O'Neil, Judith Vosselli Ulrich Haupt, and Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy (Laurel and Hardy). Note that famous actor Lionel Barrymore directed six movies between 1913 and 1917, but then solely acted until 1929, when he directed another nine movies between then and 1931. Also note that, to increase box office appeal, minor scenes with Laurel & Hardy were interspersed throughout the movie prior to its release, but the movie is probably best remembered for its scene where star Lawrence Tibbett sings an operatic song while he is tied to two posts and being whipped! MGM's fears about the public not responding well to an "opera" movie were unfounded, because this was the 7th highest grossing movie of 1930! Note that Lawrence Tibbett was a singer during the 1930s (but best remembered from the Metropolitan Opera), who appeared in several movies as, naturally, an opera singer. He was the first to play the leading role in many famous operas, including the role of Brutus Jones, in The Emperor Jones (which he played in blackface)! Darryl F. Zanuck signed him to a multi-picture contract, sure he would be a major star, but alas, he was not, and he only appeared in a few movies. Later, he had throat problems, which led to a drinking problem (or perhaps vice versa), and his later years were unhappy. Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no complete surviving copies are thought to exist (only a trailer, soundtrack, and a short scene survive).
