An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) General Spanky, the 1936 Fred Newmeyer & Gordon Douglas Our Gang feature-length military war comedy ("A Hal Roach Full Length Feature"; "70 minutes of delight!"; produced by Hal Roach) starring George 'Spanky' McFarland (in the title role), Phillips Holmes, Ralph Morgan, Irving Pichel, Rosina Lawrence, Eugene 'Porky' Lee, Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer, Billie 'Buckwheat' Thomas, John 'Uh huh' Collum and Willie Best. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", retitled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned two inserts, several window cards, lobby cards, and a few stills from this movie, but we have never before auctioned THIS one-sheet! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had tears and paper loss scattered down the vertical fold, with a lesser amount on the horizontal folds. It had a rough horizontal crease across the girl's face. It had a number of stains scattered in the upper part of the poster, more so in the background areas, but entering a few letters of the title. It had some tears and stains around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed this extremely rare poster onto linen with very little attempt at restoration, and it was handled roughly after it was restored, so that added some more creases. If I owned this incredibly rare poster, I would have it removed from the old linen and properly restored and backed, and afterwards, it will display really well, and much of the restoration would be in the background areas.
