Artist: Tom Jung Important Added Info: Note that most Star Wars collectors are well aware that larger posters were made for this classic movie, and they have likely seen images of the three-sheet and six-sheet (over the years, we have auctioned 26 three-sheets and 5 six-sheets). However, many collectors are not aware that an even larger poster, called a "7-sheet" (seven sheet), which measures 81 1/2" x 91 3/4", was also created! It was made in two styles, one with the "style A" image, and the other with a "teaser" image that is all text. The reason most collectors would not be aware of these was because they were likely only used in Los Angeles and New York. We checked with one of the world's foremost Star Wars experts, Pete Vilmur, and he says that he thinks "that less than ten of each of these 7-sheets exist", surely making them among the most rare Star Wars posters there are (likely only the "triple-bill" one-sheets, where only two of each were made, and the 24-sheet, are more rare than the 7-sheets). Offered here is the extremely rare "style A" 7-sheet. This is only the second time we have auctioned this poster (the first one was linenbacked, and we auctioned it in March of 2017 for $11,500. This example has a fascinating provenance. Our consignor has owned it since 1977! His family was in a business in Hollywood that supplied Hollywood studios, and he was a chef with in a Hollywood restaurant in 1977. One of his customers worked for George Lucas, drawing backgrounds for the upcoming movie, Star Wars. She told our consignor about the upcoming movie, and he followed along as it was being made, getting regular updates both from his friend and from trade publications. Because of his work connections and his great interest in the movie, he was able to be one of the attendees at the Hollywood premiere of Star Wars in 1977. One of his best friends worked for "Warner Brothers Sound", and he knew of our consignor's great love of the movie (as did all his friends!), and a week after it opened, his friend came to his house and gave him this 7-sheet, which he had managed to acquire from the studio. Our consignor had a party where he taped it to the wall (with just a few small pieces of clear tape on each of the four sections), but three days later, he took it down, and other than showing a few friends over the following 40 years, the poster has been carefully stored in his possession ever since, until he has now consigned it to us! Condition: very good. As noted above, our consignor used small pieces of clear tape to hold each of the four sections to his wall for three days, and then he took the poster down, leaving the parts of the small pieces of clear tape that were on parts of the borders. Otherwise, the poster has the most minor of fold and border wear. After a simple linenbacking by a professional, the poster will look incredible, and the only restoration required will be removing the small pieces of tape (which every professional can do). Or of course, the new owner can leave the poster unbacked. Either way, the new owner will have one of the most rare Star Wars posters there is, which will look incredible if displayed!
