The Original 1935 Vernon Hampton Artwork Created for the Pressbook for David Copperfield (measures 9 1/2" x 29 1/2" (Learn More)

The Personal History, Adventures, Experience, and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger (released in other English-speaking countries as "Charles Dickens' David Copperfield"), the classic 1935 George Cukor historical England orphan coming-of-age family relationship romantic melodrama ("Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Mightiest Production"; "1935's Most Beloved Motion Picture"; "The Best-Loved Motion Picture of 1935"; "Charles Dickens' Greatest Story"; "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's greatest motion picture with a cast of 65"; "Star cast of 65 players"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the famous novel by Charles Dickens; produced by David O. Selznick) starring W.C. Fields ("as Micawber"), Lionel Barrymore ("as Dan Peggotty"), Madge Evans ("as Agnes"), Maureen O'Sullivan ("as Dora"), Edna May Oliver ("as Aunt Betsey"), Lewis Stone ("as Mr. Wickfield"), Frank Lawton (in the title role "as David, The Man"), Freddie Bartholomew (in the title role "as David, The Child"), Elizabeth Allan ("as Mrs. Copperfield"), Roland Young ("as Uriah Heep"), Jessie Ralph (as Nurse Peggotty), Frank Lawton (as David, The Man), Jean Cadell, Lennox Pawle, Basil Rathbone, and a "Star Cast of 65 Players". Note that MGM took a great chance in casting W.C. Fields in the role of Micawber. No doubt everyone expected Fields to greatly ham up the role, and turn this serious subject into slapstick, but instead, he gave a wonderful performance, and added greatly to the movie!

Artist: Vernon Hampton
Important Added Info: Note that this original artwork was created for (and used) in the pressbook for MGM's 1935 production of "David Copperfield". It was drawn by Vernon Hampton, and is signed in the bottom right corner. We do not know information about this artist, but if anyone e-mails us, we will post it here. Note that the artwork has two 3" x 4" inset images. These do not appear to be originals. It is likely they were drawn much larger, and then reduced size reproductions were created and dropped in to the two boxes, prior to the printing of the pressbook. The artwork is on a typical illustration board of that time, and it has been lightly glued on to a heavier matting (it is lifting from that matting, and could be easily removed from it by a professional or a talented amateur). Note that the artwork features exquisitely rendered images of all the principals from the movie, and W.C. fields is featured prominently at the center of the artwork, even though he had a relatively minor role within the movie. This artwork was obtained decades ago by a man in the motion picture industry, and it was framed on his wall for many years. I have only seen a few examples of original illustration art from 1930s pressbooks, and this is the finest of those I have seen!

Condition: fine. The artwork was lightly mounted to a heavier board, but it could be easily removed, and it has had no effect on the artwork itself. Except for some slight darkening, it appears the artwork has survived the past 70 years in remarkable condition, and likely looks almost exactly as it did when it was created in 1935!
