eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result n038 PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET linen half-sheet movie poster '53 Sam Fuller Date Sold 9/26/2006Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) Pickup on South Street, the classic 1953 Samuel Fuller Red Menace government agent crime film noir ("How the F.B.I. took a chance on a B-girl... and won!"; "From a story by Dwight Taylor"; "Screen play by Samuel Fuller"; "Adapted from the play by Dwight Taylor"; about a beautiful "B-girl" who does not realize that she is carrying microfilm for Communists which will be sent to Moscow, and a pickpocket picks her pocket, and both the FBI and the Communists will do anything to get the microfilm back, and the pickpocket and the B-girl become romantically involved) starring Richard Widmark, Jean Peters, Thelma Ritter (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Murvyn Vye, Richard Kiley, Willis B. Bouchey, and Milburn Stone. Note that originally Betty Grable was going to play the lead female role, and Marilyn Monroe read for the part as well, but ultimately, Jean Peters got the part. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that there is a corrective snipe across the top tagline of this poster. The tagline originally read, "How the F.B.I. took a chance on a B-girl... And won!", but the snipe reads, "How the law took a chance on a B-girl... And won!"! Apparently, someone from the F.B.I. objected to them being presented in this light (and the movie may well have taken liberties with the truth), and they likely demanded that the tagline be changed. This certainly is not a defect, as it was added by the studio, and in my opinion, it adds to the poster! Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some very minor defects that were not completely restored, and are slightly noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster was never folded. There was a 7" slightly semi-circular crease across the very center of the poster, in the image of the two men and the girl, and a similar crease to the right of that image (it appears the poster was roughly handled). There were many creases, smudges, pinholes, and tiny tears around the edges of the poster and some scattered creases and smudges in the image (more so in the solid areas). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, but the restorer pretty much just backed it as is, leaving the above defects as is. You see them when you look closely at the poster, and from a distance, you can also see slight signs of the creases in the center and right center of the image. Learn More about condition grades
