An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 10" x 13 3/4") (Learn More) The General Died at Dawn, the 1936 Lewis Milestone romantic China war mercenary spy espionage adventure thriller ("Two great stars in Clifford Odet's thrilling adventure drama of today's turbulent, war ravaged China!"; about an American mercenary fighting on the side of peasants in a Chinese rebellion, and he is given a lot of money to buy weapons, and he is captured, and he and his girlfriend are tortured to get them to reveal where the money is) starring Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, William Frawley, Dudley Digges, Akim Tamiroff (in the title role as General Yang; nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Porter Hall, and J.M. Kerrigan NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we don't know if this movie played in Belgium in 1936, but we think it likely did. We also don't know the date of the poster, but it is consistent with several other very small Belgian posters that were released in that country at the end of World War II and immediately after (due to the many paper shortages), and we feel certain it is from that time, which would make it a mid-1940s re-release. Also note that we sold another example of this poster, but that one had borders on all four sides (this example has been trimmed) but that example had different coloring on the title (and that one had a map on the back) and we would think it dates from the same time. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster originally had blank borders that were neatly trimmed off. There were creases and scuffs in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
