An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 25" x 39") (Learn More) Bulldog Drummond Comes Back, the 1937 Louis King detective mystery crime thriller ("A real action drama full of fun and thrills!"; "Based on 'The Female of the Species' by H.C. [Sapper] McNeile") starring John Barrymore, John Howard (in the title role as Bulldog Drummond), Louise Campbell, Reginald Denny, E.E. Clive, and J. Carrol Naish. Note that "Bulldog Drummond" was a fictional English detective who was created in 1920 in a magazine story by H.C. McNeile, who wrote under the pen name of "Sapper" He appeared in ten novels, short stories, and even stage plays. When McNeile passed away in 1937, his friend, Gerard Fairlie, wrote more stories between 1938 and 1954, and after that, other authors created even more stories. Drummond was a World War I veteran who is bored and becomes an amateur detective, and he marries his first client, who becomes his assistant. The first movie based on this character was in 1923, with Carlyle Blackwell in the lead role. There was one more silent with Jack Buchanan in the lead, and then Ronald Colman starred in the first sound version in 1929. There were 13 movies in the 1930s, many with John Howard in the lead role. The character was revived in 1947, and 5 movies were made between 1947 and 1951, with Ron Randell, Tom Conway, and Walter Pidgeon playing the leads. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Richardson Studio Important Added Info: Note that this one-sheet has been trimmed and it now measures 25" x 39". Also note that there is no studio on the poster, and it looks like it could be a "other company" poster, or could possibly even be from another country. There is a date stamp on the back of the poster from 1938, so it is surely from the first release. If anyone knows more about the origin of this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: good. All of the borders have been trimmed from the poster and there is a 6" jagged tear in the left end of the bottom horizontal fold, a 3" tear in the middle right in Barrymore's cheek, as well as some other tears along the foldlines and around the edges of the poster. This is the kind of poster that responds well to restoration! The colors are still vibrant and the poster is mostly "all there", so that a talented restorer could surely replace the borders, perform slight restoration to the image area, and the poster would look great with little paint restoration within the image area.
