An Original Vintage German Movie Export Souvenir Program Book (measures 9" x 11 1/4" [23 x 29 cm]; 17 pages) (Learn More)

Das alte Gesetz (released in English-speaking countries as "The Ancient Law"), the 1923 E.A. Dupont (Ewald Andre Dupont) German silent Jewish family relationship acting-versus-religion melodrama (about the son of a Jewish rabbi who wants to become an actor, and he leaves aside the traditions of his family to do so, which makes his father declare that he "has no son") starring Henny Porten, Ruth Weyher, Hermann Vallentin, Avrom Morewskim Ernst Deutsch, and Grete Berger. If this movie (by noted German director, E.A. Dupont, who directed "Variety", a very highly regarded circus movie) sounds incredibly similar to "The Jazz Singer", it is! The only question is which one "stole" from the other. The movie "The Jazz Singer" was not released until 1927, but it had been a play since 1925, and the story it was based on was written by Samson Raphaelson in 1922, which predates this movie, but on the other hand, this movie was based on the memoir of actor Heinrich Laube, which had been written long before! We tried to do some quick research to determine "which came first", but we were unable to find out for sure. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

You can use these images to determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are many other pages you are not seeing.
