Date Sold 3/3/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Forbidden Trail, the 1932 Lambert Hillyer cowboy western ("A battle of lead and wits - with LOVE as the spoils of Victory!"; "Reckless romance on a danger-paved trail!"; "Fighting the Battle of his Life!"; "Riding for Life - for Honor - and for LOVE!"; "Ride thrill-bent with Buck through a reckless romance on a danger-paved trail!") starring Buck Jones, George Cooper, Barbara Weeks, Mary Carr, and Frank La Rue. Buck Jones also starred in the 1920 and 1941 films titled "Forbidden Trails" which means that he used whatever trail he wanted to throughout his career. Note that Buck Jones' white horse was named Silver (just like The Lone Ranger's later on!), and Silver made 73 movies with Buck Jones from 1922 until Jones' death in 1942 in the tragic Cocoanut Grove fire. But oddly, Silver was almost never billed on the posters for Buck Jones' movies as so many other famous horses (most especially Tom Mix's Tony) were! Also note that Mary Carr became a major star in the mid 1910s around the age of 40, playing the parts of saintly mothers. She continued to make movies (switching to grandmother roles) through the mid 1930s, and then continued with mostly uncredited parts until the mid 1950s. She passed away in 1973 at the age of 99! We auctioned it once before, 17 years ago, when it auctioned for $2,756! However, this poster has clear differences from that one in the way it is colored. One might think that those differences could be accounted for by this poster having faded, but we don't think so. It appears that this poster was printed without the black plate, which means most of the writing and much of the image is quite a bit lighter (or a different color) than the other poster, because the black is missing. This clearly is a very significant difference, and you need to consider that before bidding on this very rare poster. We would think that this is a printing error, but we supposed there could also be a different explanation, like that they did a re-release poster with one less color, but the problem with that is that the date is the same on both posters, something Columbia did not do (as far as we know). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster was printed without the black plate (see above). It also had creases, tears, and paper loss scattered down the center and across the middle. It had a diagonal crease above the right half of the top fold, with some small tears and tiny paper loss in the bottom horizontal fold. It had pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges, with a semi-circular tear in the top border that went through the very top of Buck Jones' hat. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Considering the poster's significant defects, the restorer did a pretty good job, but the restorer did not attempt to address the missing black plate (because that would have required repainting the entire poster). The poster displays pretty well, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, so please bear this in mind, and also bear in mind its printing defect BEFORE placing a bid on it.
