A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 6 1/4" x 9 1/4" [16 x 23 cm]; 290 pages) (Learn More) William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the 1936 George Cukor Italy romantic family feud tragedy melodrama ("The world's greatest love story!"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the classic play by William Shakespeare) starring Norma Shearer (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Juliet), Leslie Howard (in the title role as Romeo), John Barrymore (as Mercutio), Edna May Oliver (as the nurse), Basil Rathbone (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Tybalt), C. Aubrey Smith (as Lord Capulet), Andy Devine, Ralph Forbes (as Paris), Reginald Denny (as Benvolio), and Violet Kember Cooper (as Lady Capulet). Note that one complaint of this film adaptation was that Shearer and Howard were far too old for the characters they played. Howard was 43 years old, and Shearer was 34, whereas Romeo was around 16, and Juliet 13! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is the Random House photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: Random House (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Condition: good to very good. The dust jacket is in a protective sleeve.
