Date Sold 4/16/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A 1937 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 12" x 18"; 8 pages) (Learn More) Reaching for the Moon (released in Hungary as "Modern Romeo"), the 1930 Edmund Goulding Wall Street cruise ship romantic musical comedy ("Based on a story with music by Irving Berlin"; about a female pilot who has an air show, and by chance she meets a rich stockbroker, and she bets her friend she can get a date with him; one thing leads to another and they end up on a cruise ship together, and even though she is engaged to another man, the stockbroker tries to win her over; but then the stock market crashes, and he loses all his money, but she doesn't care!) starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Bebe Daniels, Edward Everett Horton, Jack Mulhall, and Bing Crosby (uncredited in his very first movie role, as "Singer"!). Note that this is a fascinating case of "what might have been"! Originally, there were a lot of Irving Berlin songs, and the male lead was going to be played by either Lawrence Gray or Jack Whiting, but more importantly, Ginger Rogers was going to be the female lead, and Busby Berkeley was going to do the choreography. But then Ginger went to Broadway and starred in the Gershwin musical "Girl Crazy", and Douglas Fairbanks was cast as the male lead, and he sang one of the Irving Berlin songs. At that point, several of the songs were cut out of the movie, and Irving Berlin walked off the set, and the movie shifted dramatically, becoming a more typical romantic comedy, with just some slight music. Berlin received credit on the posters, but in later years, he disowned the movie as it was released! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this pressbook was folded across the center at one time. Because of this, this pressbook can be sent in one of our standard size packages (if it is purchased together with pressbooks that can NOT be folded, then it will of course have to be sent in one of our oversized packages). But if this pressbook is purchased by itself (or solely with other pressbooks that can be folded), then the shipping will be much lower, because it fits in a standard package. Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The cover of the pressbook is completely separated along the spine. Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of the pressbook, plus an image of any supplements or heralds (if there are any included with this pressbook), but of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are selling (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!
