An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Glass Slide (measures approximately 3" x 4") (Learn More) Monsters of the Deep, the 1931 Harold Austin ocean fishing documentary ("Presented by Talking Picture Epics Inc., 11 West 42nd Street -- New York City -- N.Y.") narrated by Harold Austin. Note that this was an obscure fishing documentary, and someone once uncovered many examples of the original 1931 one-sheet, which has a duotone image of some fishermen standing by a giant fish they caught. But some VERY enterprising distributor had the wonderful idea of re-distributing this movie in the late 1930s as an action adventure movie, and had an unknown artist create a great image of two boys in the ocean running from a truly frightening giant fish, with the tagline "See - TERRIFIC ENCOUNTER with the DEVIL FISH" (it is kind of like this guy had the idea for "Jaws" decades before Steven Spielberg!). I am sure this poster did wonders for the box office of this movie, but I would love to have seen the look on people's faces after they started watching the movie and realized how badly they had been deceived! Also note that this movie was distributed by "Talking Picture Epics", which was a company that was apparently only in business from around 1930 to 1931 or so, and during that time, they distributed really odd sounding documentaries to exotic locations! In addition to this movie, they also distributed "Bottom of the World", "Across the World with Mr. and Mrs. Johnson", and others, but we strongly suspect that these were not actual movies, but were rather re-titlings of other movies, or possibly compilations from earlier movies (for example, "The Bottom of the World" sounds suspiciously like "With Byrd at the South Pole", and "Across the World with Mr. and Mrs. Johnson" sounds like it would have been a compilation of Osa and Martin Johnson's earlier jungle documentaries). It is quite possible that the only thing that made these "talking pictures" was that a narration was added. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Important Added Info: The slide does not have a cardboard holder, but rather there is black tape around all four edges (front and back), typical of older glass slides. When we auction slides that have a cardboard holder, we provide a separate image of how the cardboard holder looks, but when we auction slides with the black tape (like this one) we only provide the scan of the glass slide image, because that really is about all there is to see. Condition: very good to fine. The theater that used this slide wrote the days the movie was playing in the play dates section at the bottom of the glass. The slide does not have a cardboard holder, but rather there is black tape around all four edges (front and back), typical of older glass slides. The slide is in nice condition!
