A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" [13 x 20 cm]; 244 pages) (Learn More) The Climax, the 1944 George Waggner Universal kidnapping suspense thriller ("The Screen's Classic of Suspense!"; "Adapted by Curt Siodmak from the play by Edward Locke"; basically an unauthorized remake of The Phantom of the Opera, which Universal had made the year before with Susanna Foster, who stars in this movie, where Karloff is a demented doctor who, years ago, killed his fiancee rather than have her become an opera star, and now he becomes obsessed with another beautiful young opera singer, and he wants to stop her from singing by any means, and of course, her young lover is trying to save her from the mad doctor!) starring Susanna Foster ("Sensation of 'Phantom of the Opera!"), Turhan Bey ("Romantic Hit of 'Dragon Seed'!"), Boris Karloff ("Great star of 'Arsenic and Old Lace'!"), Gale Sondergaard, June Vincent, Thomas Gomez, George Dolenz, Jane Farrar, Ludwig Stossel, and Scotty Beckett. Note that this movie was a remake of Universal's movie of the same name made in 1930, starring Jean Hersholt and Kathryn Crawford. That movie also has much in common with The Phantom of the Opera, which Universal had, of course, made in 1925 with Lon Chaney Sr. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is the Books, Inc. photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: World Publishing (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Condition: good to very good. The dust jacket is in a protective sleeve.
