A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 6 1/4" x 9 1/4" [16 x 23 cm]; 290 pages) (Learn More) William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the 1936 George Cukor Italy romantic family feud tragedy melodrama ("The world's greatest love story!"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the classic play by William Shakespeare) starring Norma Shearer (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Juliet), Leslie Howard (in the title role as Romeo), John Barrymore (as Mercutio), Edna May Oliver (as the nurse), Basil Rathbone (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Tybalt), C. Aubrey Smith (as Lord Capulet), Andy Devine, Ralph Forbes (as Paris), Reginald Denny (as Benvolio), and Violet Kember Cooper (as Lady Capulet). Note that one complaint of this film adaptation was that Shearer and Howard were far too old for the characters they played. Howard was 43 years old, and Shearer was 34, whereas Romeo was around 16, and Juliet 13! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a wonderful special hardcover "movie edition" for this movie, but it was not published by Grosset & Dunlap, but rather by Random House. It has the usual full-page black & white images from the movie (nine in this case), but in addition, it has a great article about creating the movie by Irving Thalberg, plus a foreword by an English professor, and also articles in the back of the book, including about directing the movie by George Cukor, about playing their parts by Leslie Howard and John Barrymore, and much more, and there are even candids of the behind the scenes people. One wishes there were special movie editions like this done for every movie! Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Condition: good to very good. There is slight separation at the top of the spine. See our multiple images to get a good sense of the condition of this book. Learn More about condition grades
