H.G. Wells' Island of Lost Souls, the classic 1933 Erle C. Kenton Universal genetic experimentation fantasy horror thriller ("The Panther Woman lured men on - only to destroy them - body and soul!"; "The Panther Woman -the body of a siren - the heart of a child - the soul of a cruel Jungle Killer"; loosely based on the novel 'The Island of Dr. Moreau' by H.G. Wells) starring Charles Laughton (as Dr. Moreau), Bela Lugosi, Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams (as "Ruth Thomas"), Kathleen Burke (billed as "The Panther Woman"; in her first movie role!), Arthur Hohl, Stanley Fields, Paul Hurst, and a bunch of "manimals" (half man, half animal!)

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1951 re-release one-sheet, and it is a VERY unusual poster, for several reasons. We know that this classic movie was re-released in 1958. Several sources on the Internet say that in that year, Paramount sold the rights to this movie to Universal Pictures. We have previously auctioned a one-sheet and lobby cards that seem to surely be from 1958 (the lobby cards are dated, and the one-sheet is not, but they have a very similar look). But those solely say "A Paramount Picture", so that doesn't match with Universal having bought the rights that year, so we suspect that this information from the IMDb is just flat out wrong. THIS poster has "Re-released by Universal Pictures" printed in the bottom right, but it is undated. It has much better printing than the one that seems to be from 1958. Also, it solely has "Printed in U.S.A." in the bottom border, and our consignor tells us that when he first acquired the poster, he did a lot of research, and that he discovered it was from 1951 and that it was printed by the Hatch Print Co. of Nashville, Tennessee. He says that when he researched the poster, he found an image of it on the Hatch Print Company's website, but it is no longer there. So there are lots of questions about it, but no clear answers! So we are calling it a 1951 re-release (based on our consignor's information), which is our best guess (and the poster is consistent with being from 1951). It is certainly an incredibly rare poster that has much better printing than the other re-release one-sheet, and great taglines (it is possible it was an original 1933 trade ad that was re-used for this re-release), and not only have we never auctioned it before, but we cant' find that anyone else has either! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was tri-folded only. It had some tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds, with an extra horizontal fold 1" below the regular bottom one, at a slight horizontal. It had some tiny tears and creases around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but it is slightly "lifting" from the linen in the lower left of the image (it is very slight, and any restorer could better glue that area without re-backing the poster.
