An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) A.J. Cronin's The Keys of the Kingdom, the 1944 John M. Stahl China romantic religious Catholic priest melodrama ("Screen play by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Nunnally Johnson"; "By A.J. Cronin, Author of 'The Citadel'") starring Gregory Peck (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price, Rosa Stradner, Roddy McDowall, Edmund Gwenn, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Peggy Ann Garner, Jane Ball, James Gleason, Anne Revere, Benson Fong, Philip Ahn, and Richard Loo. Note that A.J. Cronin was a doctor who had health problems in 1930. He wrote a book called "Hatter's Castle" in 1931, and it was so successful that he stopped practicing medicine and wrote a series of books, all centering around doctors, including "The Citadel" and "Keys of the Kingdom", all of which were made into movies! This poster has been linenbacked, but it was not very well done, either because the restorer did not do a very good job, or because the years since it has been linenbacked have not been kind to the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Generally, it had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and creases scattered down the center of the poster, with pretty minor fold and border wear. The poster was not that well backed, because you can see signs of the above general defects and the restoration of the defects (in some cases, as should be immediately evident in our image, the linenbacker did no restoration to some of the defects). I would think few collectors would want to display it as it is, without someone performing some additional restoration. Certainly, a talented restorer could perform additional restoration (either with or without re-backing the poster), but it might be fairly expensive to have this done, so bear that in mind before you place a bid. Note that the poster was backed onto a very thin linen, and at some point after it was backed, the poster was very stained across the top, and also down the right side, with also part of the left and bottom borders, but most of this staining affects the excess linen and the borders of the poster, and not the image area (and a restorer could certainly remove the poster from the existing thin linen and properly re-back the poster).
