An Original Vintage Theatrical Uruguayan Movie Herald (measures 3 1/2" x 6 3/4" [9 x 17 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) The Eternal City, the 1923 George Fitzmaurice silent Italy historical romantic melodrama ("The Eternal City the City of Love"; "Samuel Goldwyn. Not now connected with Goldwyn Pictures Corp."; "From the story by Sir Hall Caine"; a wild story combining historical fact and complete fiction; about an Italian orphan who is adopted by a man and raised with the man's daughter, and when the orphan grows up, he falls in love with the girl, but he ends up joining the Fascists and becomes the right hand to Benito Mussolini!; she is sponsored by the secret leader of the Communist party, and the man thinks that she has betrayed him, and he kills her benefactor, and she takes the blame for it; the movie ends with an image of Mussolini in the royal palace, by the King) starring Barbara La Marr, Bert Lytell, Lionel Barrymore, Richard Bennett, and Benito Mussolini (who allowed the makers of the film to photograph him and the King, for the climax of the movie!). Note that Mussolini is thought of as a World War II figure, but he actually was in power in Italy starting in 1922, and this movie, made shortly after that, incorporated Mussolini's rise to power in the plot. Note that three soon to be great stars all had uncredited roles in this movie: Ronald Colman, Joan Bennett, and Betty Bronson! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Please note that Uruguayan heralds, like Spanish heralds, were printed in large quantities, and then sent to individual theaters in Uruguay, and they would have the backs of them overprinted or stamped with their theater name and specific play dates. But because a movie might play in Uruguay for a period of a year or two (traveling from theater to theater), there is no guarantee that the date overprinted on the back of the herald is the same as the date that the herald was first printed (and the date that the movie first played in Uruguay). We strongly suspect that most movies did not reach Uruguay until a year or two after their first release in other countries, but we can't say for certain. Therefore, we don't list the date overprinted on the back of a herald as the date of the herald (or the date of the movie's first release in Uruguay) unless we know from some other source that the later year was when the movie first played in Uruguay. If it is important to you that the date on the herald is the same date as when the movie first played in its country of origin, then please look at our image of the back of this herald to see if there is a different date printed on it.
