An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Life of Emile Zola, the 1937 William Dieterle (this is one of five biographical movies Dieterle directed for Warner Bros; nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) biography melodrama (about the life of the famous French writer; from the book 'Zola and His Time' by Matthew Josephson; "Story by Heinz Herald and Geza Herczeg"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Paul Muni (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Emile Zola), Gale Sondergaard (as Lucie Dreyfus), Joseph Schildkraut (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Alfred Dreyfus), Gloria Holden (as Alexandrine Zola), Donald Crisp, Erin O'Brien Moore, Henry O'Neill, Morris Carnovsky, Louis Calhern, and Robert Barrat (as Major Walsin-Esterhazy). Note that as usual, Paul Muni wanted to appear like the actual Emile Zola, so he played the part with a beard, and for the parts of the movie where Zola is older, he had white hair and glasses. Naturally, Warner Bros. did not think that an image of him in makeup would be helpful to attract moviegoers, so on some of the advertising, they used an image of young, handsome Paul Muni out of makeup, even though he never appears like that in the movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a Warner Bros. non-linen lobby card (there are also linen lobby cards on this title). Some people believe the non-linen cards to be from 1937 as the linen cards are, but we believe them to be from an early 1940s re-release. When Warner Bros.' top stars all enlisted in World War II, Warner Bros. re-released many of their top titles, and the non-linen cards are from 1942 to 1945 re-releases. The linen and non-linen cards are not exactly the same, either on the linen ones, the "COUNTRY OF ORIGIN U.S.A." is in the bottom left corner under two lines of type, and on the non-linen ones, it is in the bottom center. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. There are pinholes, faint smudges, and dot stains scattered around the edges. There are some very faint smudges scattered in the center of the image.
