A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" [13 x 20 cm]; 346 pages) (Learn More) The Wind, the classic 1928 Victor Sjostrom (billed as "Victor Seastrom"; he was a major Swedish director of the 1910s and 1920s, and late in his life, he turned to acting, giving memorable performances in several Ingmar Bergman movies, most notably "Wild Strawberries") romantic love triangle murder melodrama ("Lillian Gish in a pioneer epic!"; "Scenario by Frances Marion"; "From the novel by Dorothy Scarborough"; about a beautiful young woman from Virginia who goes to live on the prairie with relatives, and she encounters all kinds of terrible situations, made worse by the dreary landscape and massive winds that blow sand over everything, and she fends off suitors and enters into an unwanted marriage) starring Lillian Gish, Lars Hanson, Montagu Love, Dorothy Cumming, and Edward Earle. Note that this movie is not for all tastes, especially because it is relentlessly downbeat, but many regard it as a masterpiece, and it is easy to see why Ingmar Bergman idolized director Sjostrom and you can see the influence of this movie on many Bergman movies! Important Added Info: Note that this is the first Grosset & Dunlap photoplay edition from 1928 (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies (there were also some by other publishers, but Grosset & Dunlap printed the lion's share of these). They would re-publish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. The example of this book offered here does not have its dust jacket. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Condition: good to very good.
