An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 13" x 26" [33 x 66 cm]; 12 pages). Also included is an ad supplement that has 3 pages, and also a herald that has 4 pages. (Learn More)

Werewolf of London, the 1935 Stuart Walker England monster horror thriller ("Beware! Terror strikes in the night"; "Murder in the moonlight! Terror stalks! An unseen hand strikes!"; "Beware the wicked hour and the stalking being!"; "Beware the stalking being, half human, half beast!") starring Henry Hull (in the title role as the werewolf), Warner Oland (best remembered as Charlie Chan in the 20th Century Fox series), Valerie Hobson, Lester Matthews, Clark Williams, Spring Byington, Lawrence Grant, and J.M. Kerrigan. Note that this is the "forgotten" Universal horror movie of the 1930s, because Universal abandoned this portrayal of the werewolf, and created an entirely different wolf-man in 1941 with Lon Chaney Jr. in very different makeup from that which Henry Hull wore in this movie. But this was Universal's very first werewolf movie!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1935 first release pressbook (and even if we were to ever get another example of the pressbook, it seems unlikely it would have the very large 26" x 26" supplement that is 3 pages, or the herald)! Like the pressbook they made for The Bride of Frankenstein the same year, Universal made a wonderful very large pressbook for this movie with a full-color cover that can certainly be displayed like a poster (which it essentially is!), and like with The Bride of Frankenstein pressbook, it also has full-color posters on the back cover. Pressbooks like these are unbelievably rare and it certainly seems fair that they should sell for the same or more than the smaller posters for these titles, because you not only get the cover poster, but you get so much more, and they are pretty much just as rare as those smaller posters! Also note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald which is pictured next to the pressbook below. Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Almost every Academy Award winning movie would have a special "Academy Award winner" supplement. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!

Note: We have 11 images of this pressbook, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 11 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 1.

The pressbook was tri-folded at one time, and while we could re-fold it and send it in a standard flat package, it being stored flat has helped diminish the folds, so we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package that measures approximately 15" x 28", but that will be the choice of the new owner of this incredibly rare pressbook.

Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The covers have separated at the spine. The tipped-in herald on the inside front cover has separated down the middle, and the left side of it is separate from the pressbook, and the right side is lightly glued in at the top. It has some pinholes in the corners of the back cover and some minor wear around the edges of both covers and along the folds. There was a tiny piece of the front cover separated from the top right corner and someone put a tiny piece of tape on the back of that area, but otherwise, the poster has had no restoration. Please look closely at our super-sized images before bidding on this incredibly rare pressbook.
