Valerie Hobson was an English film and television actress (her father was a British officer stationed in Northern Ireland when she was born) from the 1930s to the 1960s. She started out as a dancer, but after a bout of scarlet fever as a teen, she had to switch to acting. She became a major English star. She moved to Hollywood, and was signed by Universal, and she was given a part in the 1934 Great Expectations, but her role was cut out! However, she soon appeared in some major movies, including the classic Bride of Frankenstein and Werewolf of London, but she returned to England. She married producer Anthony Havelock-Allen and appeared in many of his movies. In 1946, she played the adult Estella in David Lean's Great Expectations, which was ironic because she had been cut out of the 1934 version! After she divorced Asquith in 1952, she married politician John Profumo, who later was at the center of the greatest sex scandal politics had ever known to that time when he cheated on her with a showgirl who was also having an affair with a Soviet military attache! Hobson stood by her husband, and they remained married for 43 years. Some of her other movies include: Werewolf in London, Great Expectations, and Kind Hearts and Coronets. She passed away in 1998 at the age of 81.
