An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

This Gun For Hire, the classic 1942 Frank Tuttle spy espionage counterfeiting murder crime film noir ("Killer without a conscience! Lover without a heart?"; "Based on the novel by Graham Greene") starring Veronica Lake (as a magician who does card tricks!), Robert Preston, Laird Cregar, Alan Ladd, Tully Marshall, Mikhail Rasumny, Marc Lawrence, Pamela Blake, Emmett Vogan, and Victor Kilian. Note that Alan Ladd was fourth billed in this movie (he had been in movies for several years, including in Citizen Kane, but he had mostly tiny roles), but this movie made him a major star. It is incredibly fortunate that the U.S. poster artist chose to feature only fourth-billed Ladd and first-billed Lake on the one-sheet, making it one of the most desirable U.S. posters!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that the inserts and half-sheets from this movie are far more rare than the one-sheets and lobby cards. Over all our years of auctioning, we have auctioned the insert three times, and we have only once before auctioned either half-sheet (and that was a different example of the style B half-sheet that we are currently auctioning). Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would almost certainly damage it, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage).

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was folded and there were creases in the right half of the horizontal fold and the bottom half of the vertical fold, and paper loss at the crossfold. There were tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss on the left half of the horizontal fold and the top half of the vertical fold. There were pinholes and some tears around the edges. There were stains and scuffs in the right half of Cregar's face, and two scuff marks in Ladd's neck, with some smudges and scuffs scattered through the image. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was paperbacked many years ago, and restoration was performed to the above defects. The poster was framed and displayed, and the red colors in the poster have faded to a lighter red throughout, and the restoration has become much more noticeable throughout (see our image). One could display the poster as it is, but I would think there is an excellent chance the new owner will have the poster re-backed and have additional restoration performed, so bear that expense in mind (and the current condition of the poster) prior to placing a bid on it.
