Date Sold 7/12/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) General Spanky, the 1936 Fred Newmeyer & Gordon Douglas Our Gang feature-length military war comedy ("A Hal Roach Full Length Feature"; "70 minutes of delight!"; produced by Hal Roach) starring George 'Spanky' McFarland (in the title role), Phillips Holmes, Ralph Morgan, Irving Pichel, Rosina Lawrence, Eugene 'Porky' Lee, Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer, Billie 'Buckwheat' Thomas, John 'Uh huh' Collum and Willie Best. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", retitled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this title card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: very good. The card had tiny pinholes around the edges. It had paper loss in the bottom left corner, slightly extending into the solid color, and paper loss in the top left blank corner. It had a tear in the right of the top border that extended slightly into the image background. It had two tape stains in the center of the top border. Overall, the card was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed excellent restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the card still exactly looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but the card displays really well! Learn More about condition grades
