Did You Know... that on Monday, September 26th we add our "Pay and Hold" to our Checkout?

Return to Did You Know Archive
Added: 09/26/2016

Many years ago, we added our automated Checkout to our site, which allowed those with Fixed Price shipping items to go to it and arrange to pay and have their order sent by simply verifying their mailing information and giving payment instructions, all with a few clicks of their mouse. But while this was wonderful for many of you, it could not deal with non-fixed priced items, or orders that used our money saving "Pay and Hold", which allows all U.S. customers to accumulate purchases for three weeks (non-U.S. for six weeks) which saves those customers a LOT on shipping costs, but which meant they could not use our Checkout.

Sometimes people ask us, "Why don't you have fixed-price shipping on ALL the items I buy, like some other sites do?". The reason is very simple! The sites that do this either only auction very similarly sized items, or they massively over-charge on shipping so that they are covered in case shipping is higher than they expected (but that also means they make lots of money from you their customers in most cases).

We at NEVER do this! We only charge the actual cost of shipping or under on all orders (plus $3 for packing materials), and there is no way we can do this without assembling your order and finding out exactly how much it will cost to ship it to you (and of course, this is compounded by the massive quantities of items we auction, the fact that so many of them are very different sizes, and the fact that shipping companies vary their prices depending on how far away you live).

Those of you who use currently use our Pay and Hold program already know that you save tons of money on shipping using it, but in the past it has often been a complicated manual process (necessitated by the above factors). But that is now about to change, in a way that will make buying from us FAR easier when you use "Pay and Hold". What is the change? It is our Checkout 2.0, which will be added to our site on Monday, September 26th (this new Checkout will go "live" sometime that morning).

Once it does, you will be able to pay for ALL your items as Pay and Hold (and later, pay the shipping to have them combined as much as possible and shipped), and it will ENTIRELY happen within our online Checkout! This will greatly reduce the amount of back and forth emails (or phone calls) between you and us to receive payment and choose shipping methods and so on!

While we have spent a very long time preparing this (because we wanted to test it thoroughly and have it cover as many scenarios as possible), it is still likely to have at least a few "bugs". But if we encounter any significant problem with it, we have the ability to "switch out" the new Checkout for the old in case of problems to minimize any "outages" from using this new system.

There will be a link at the top of Checkout pages for "help with the new Checkout", so if you experience a problem OR just have a question, check that first. But if you don't find the answer you need, please email describing what you are having trouble with and we will get back with you as quickly as possible with instructions (or if there is a problem, we will work to fix it quickly!).

Would you like a "little" preview?

Here's a preview of what you might see in our Checkout 2.0, BUT a few notes before you proceed:

1) These images are sample information taken during our testing of the system, so it will surely look slightly different when it goes live.
2) Depending on how you are handling your purchases, you may see one or several of these scenarios in YOUR Checkout.
3) These examples are taken from a U.S. account. Non-U.S. customers may have slightly different information displaying depending on their situation (such as, ALL non-U.S. orders require shipping quotes, so they won't see the "Pay Now & Ship Now" button).
4) You won't need to remember everything below (and you won't be tested on it later)! There is a small question mark (like this "") next to each option that you can hold your mouse over or click on in order to learn more about about what that option means.

NOTE: Each of the below "screenshots" can be clicked on to see a larger version.

1) Here is an example of what you will see when you have "unpaid items".

As you can see, this shows the items that need to be paid for, grouped by the type of package they ship in and the dates they were won. After that are some options (some scenarios have different options that are not shown above).

  • Request Shipping Quotes for items exceeding hold time limit - There are due dates for Pay and Hold (when it has been here for the longest "hold time" and it needs to now be shipped). When that happens, the system requires you to pay for those items AND request shipping quotes.
  • Request Shipping Quotes for Non-Flat/Non-Rolled Items - This is shown for for odd types of items we don't auction very often and likely can't be combined with anything else (such as vinyl banners, certain bulk lots, and three-dimensional objects)
  • Pay Now & Ship Later - This is what allows you to add items to your Pay and Hold. You'll pay for the items but we'll hold them for later shipment.
Pay Now & Ship Now - This is "normal" Checkout where you just pay for everything and we ship it.

2) Here is an example of what you will see when your order has been quoted and is ready for you to select your shipping options and pay to have it shipped.

This example is very similar in appearance to what many of you who have had "shipping quoted" orders in the past. We've just made the display a little easier to view. But do note that the items in the above read "(paid)" next to their prices. That means the items have been paid for and you would solely be paying the shipping. It is completely possible that your order might contain both paid and unpaid items.

3) Here is an example of what it shows you when you have items in Pay and Hold that you have paid for.

In this example, if you solely had the first group of "Flat" items on your account, you would not have to take any action when you see this. It is simply showing you what we are holding for you and when the due date is. However, in the example, there are groups of "Rolled" and "requires a shipping quote" items that are due now. So bearing that in mind:

  • You have the option to check the box for "Ship 'Flat' Package Items Now". If you check that box and proceed, we would pack up those items and get you shipping quotes. But you may also choose NOT to check the box and keep accumulating more "Flat" purchases!
  • For the other two groups, the system gives you two options that are required (because their "due date" has past and we can't hold them any longer), so when you continue with the Checkout, you will be requesting shipping quotes for those items. Those two options in the above example are:
    • Request Shipping Quote for "Rolled" Package Items
    • Request Shipping Quote for Non-Flat/Non-Rolled items

4) Here is an example of what it shows you when you have already requested shipping quotes.

This is simply showing the items you have already requested quotes for. Note that it shows one item at the bottom that is "(paid)" whereas the other items are not yet paid.

So what happens next?

We realize that is a lot of information, so we won't go through showing you what happens when you proceed through the Checkout because much of it is really straightforward (once you get "used to it", you won't have any trouble using it at all). But know that you will see an "Order Review" screen that shows you how you are proceeding with everything in your order. If anything is not as expected, click the button at the bottom left that reads "Return to Order Review" and make any changes. If it's all good, then from there, the Checkout pretty much works just like it always has.

We're excited to have this go live on Monday the 26th. Of course, we will use any and all feedback we receive to continually further improve it. And know too that we also have other plans to make buying from us easier, but those had to wait until the above changes became live, and we hope to announce those added improvements over the coming months!
