Cool Item Of the Week: Exodus pressbook

Return to Cool Item of the Week Archive
Added: 11/19/2012

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of eMoviePoster.com, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

This week, I have the pressbook from Exodus, the classic 1961 Otto Preminger Israeli Independence epic ("Based on the novel by Leon Uris"; about the drive immediately after World War II by Jews worldwide to create an independent state of Israel that would accept any Jews wishing to go there, especially WWII refugees, and how they achieved that despite strong opposition from the British) starring Paul Newman (as Ari Ben Canaan), Eva Marie Saint (as Kitty Fremont), Ralph Richardson (as General Sutherland), Peter Lawford (as Major Caldwell), Lee J. Cobb (as Barak Ben Canaan), Sal Mineo (in his nominated for Best Supporting Actor Academy Award role; as Dov Landau), John Derek (as Taha), Hugh Griffith (as Mandria), Gregory Ratoff (as Lakavitch), Jill Haworth (she was an English actress who became a protege of Otto Preminger in 1960, appearing in his Exodus, The Cardinal, and In Harm's Way; she appeared in a few other movies in between, but then had the break of her life in 1966 when she created the role of Sally Bowles on Broadway in Cabaret; but the movie wasn't made until 1972, and she was passed over for the part in favor of Liza Minnelli, and she had few successes after, and she passed away in 2011; in her film debut!; as Karen Johansson), Marius Goring, Alexandra Stewart (as Jordana Ben Canaan), Michael Wager, Martin Benson, Paul Stevens, Betty Walker, Martin Miller, Victor Maddern, George Maharis, John Crawford, Samuel Segal, David Opatoshu (as Akiva Ben Canaan), and Felix Aylmer (as Dr. Lieberman).

Here is an image of the front cover and back cover poster pages, as well as an interior two page spread (all with much art by the great Saul Bass!):

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 25,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!).
