An Original Vintage Folded World War II Poster (measures 21" x 28" [53 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

Be With Him at Every Mail Call, the 1945 U.S. World War II (WWII) poster ("V-mail is private, reliable, patriotic") encouraging relatives (especially wives and girlfriends!) to mail letters to troops using Victory Mail, and featuring a Lejaren A. Hiller image of a woman writing a letter with soldiers receiving letters in the background. The military knew that the greatest morale booster for servicemen overseas was getting mail as often as possible, so posters like these (which were displayed in public places) did all they could to encourage friends and relatives to send letters as often as possible. Note that V-Mail (short for Victory Mail) was a hybrid mail process used by the United States during the Second World War as the primary and secure method to correspond with soldiers stationed abroad. To reduce the cost of transferring an original letter through the military postal system, a V-mail letter would be censored, copied to a film roll with other letters, shipped, and then printed back to paper upon arrival at its destination.
Artist: Lejaren A. Hiller
Important Added Info: Note that this poster (like most World War II posters) were widely distributed through the mail (to military bases and other locations). They were machine folded, and a very few of them have printing on the back of the area that was on the outside when it was fully folded, giving instructions on how the poster was to be used and displayed (see our image of the back of the poster). We don't know if this printing would be on all examples of this poster, or only some of them. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Note that this is one of 78 very rare posters (including 53 WWI and WWII posters and 18 stage play posters) that mostly date from 1888 to 1945. These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these 78 posters (which even includes a remarkable 1873 P.T. Barnum poster from his "Traveling World's Fair")! Note that in June of 2016, we auctioned around 100 posters that were from this same archive. The 78 posters we are currently auctioning represent most of the remaining posters from this remarkable find (we certainly wish there were lots more, but unfortunately there are not, so this is likely your last opportunity to acquire these great rarities!).

Condition: good. Someone put paper tape on the back of all the borders and parts of the folds, solely for reinforcement.
