An Original Vintage Unfolded Japanese Stage Play Poster (measures 28 3/4" x 40 3/4" [73 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Tadanori Yokoo is a Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter from the 1950s to the present. Born in 1936, Tadanori is one of Japan's most successful and internationally recognized artists and, because of his style, is often called the "Japanese Andy Warhol". Artist: Tadanori Yokoo Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster! Our consignor tells us that "this stage poster is for a Noh performance at the National Noh Theater in Tokyo. The performance was of a newly written play by Jakucho Setouchi, based on the "Yume no Ukihashi" episode from Genji Monogatari. Tadanori Yokoo designed several posters for Kabuki performances, but as far as I know, this is the only poster he designed for a Noh performance. For the design of this poster, Yokoo's striking explosive art was combined with three ancient Noh masks, which are a crucially important part of Noh performances." Wiki mentions that Noh masks are treasured by Noh families and institutions, and the powerful Noh schools hold the oldest and most valuable Noh masks in their private collections, rarely seen by the public. Our consignor goes on to say that "this performance was only for two days (March 3rd and 4th) and certainly not many posters were printed!"
