An Original Vintage Linenbacked French World War I Poster (measures 32" x 47" [81 x 119 cm]) (Learn More)

Compagnie Algerienne (literally translates to "Algerian Company"), the 1917 French World War I (WWI) War Bond poster (with taglines that translate to "Public limited company with a capital of 62,500,000 Francs paid in full"; "Subscribing means speeding up his return with Victory") encouraging Algerian people to help the war efforts, and featuring Lucien Jonas art of an Algerian colonial soldier greeting his wife and child in a busy market. We have seen a version with text in the blank area at the bottom that mentions the "3e Emprunt de la Defense Nationale" (3rd National Defense Loan). Note that around 500,000 men from Algeria and French West Africa fought for France during World War I.
Artist: Lucien Jonas
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French war poster, which has great art by Lucien Jonas!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had fine surface paper loss on parts of many folds. It has some paper loss in the middle of the bottom blank border and some little bits in the right blank border. It has creases around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone many years ago backed the poster onto thin linen with no excess and no restoration, and it surely should be removed from that thin linen and properly re-backed. Please bear this in mind before placing a bid on this poster.
