An Original Vintage Linenbacked Stage Play Poster (measures 20" x 29 3/4" [51 x 76 cm]) (Learn More)

Jesse James, the circa 1910s cowboy western stage play production ("The sensational Western life drama"; "The Missouri Outlaw"). Note that we have seen multiple posters that are likely from the same production. Some mention "W.I. Swain's Western Spectacular Production" and some do not. Also, some posters include art of a black African American couple. All of the posters have been printed by the Donaldson Litho Co of Newport, KY. It is certainly possible that there were multiple different productions (perhaps one even had an all-black cast). We have seen other similar posters to these in museum collections, and they have guessed at dates of "1890s" to "1920s", but our guess is that these are 1910s. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster was unevenly cut in two in the upper background area and there were some tears and paper loss in the top text area. The bottom 1/2" of the image and the entire borders were missing and were recreated. There were tape stains in the bottom center of the image. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Given the poster's many defects, someone did a pretty good job of restoring it, but its defects and the restoration of those defects are noticeable.
