An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Chimp, the 1932 James Parrott circus screwball comedy short (produced by Hal Roach; Stan and Ollie are inept circus performers who cause their circus to go bankrupt, and they have to take care of both the flea circus and the chimp!) starring Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy (Laurel and Hardy), Bobby Burns, James Finlayson, Billy Gilbert, and Charles Gemora (uncredited in the title role as Ethel the chimp!). Note that the producers of the movie titled it "The Chimp", but oddly hired Charles Gemora that role in a gorilla suit (obviously, it would have been difficult to have a human in a chimp suit, but they could have used a child). They also took liberties with their advertising showing a small chimp on the artwork posters, when the chimp in the movie was over twice that size! Finally, note that starting in 1929 and continuing into the 1940s, Charles Gemora played gorillas in many movies, likely because he owned a gorilla suit, and could do a somewhat convincing job portraying a gorilla. Just a few years later, Ray 'Crash' Corrigan would also start playing gorillas, and no doubt they competed for roles in every movie requiring a gorilla! We have only previously auctioned two stills from this movie (and NO other movie paper) until we received this lobby card! Note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a very light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Only the roughly only 40% of the top was present, and it was unevenly trimmed across the bottom of that area. Someone recreated the missing area in the bottom 60%, and they did a fairly nice job, but of course, this card has had major restoration, so bear that in mind before bidding on it.
