An Original Vintage Foil Greeting Card (measures 3 3/4" x 8 3/4" [10 x 22 cm]) (Learn More)

Mae West (born Mary Jane West) was a major star in the early and mid 1930s, as famous for her racy comments and raw sexuality as for her actual acting achievements. She was the toast of Broadway during the late 1920s, because for ten years, she had starred in a series of very sexy plays, including "Sex" in 1926, for which she was prosecuted on morals charges in 1927! In 1928, she starred in "Diamond Lil" (which later became the 1933 movie "She Done Him Wrong"). But due to censorship difficulties, she made very few movies, and those were greatly toned down versions of her stage successes. Some of her movies include: Night After Night, She Done Him Wrong, I'm No Angel, Belle of the Nineties, Goin' to Town, Klondike Annie, Go West Young Man, Every Day's a Holiday, My Little Chickadee, The Heat's On, Myra Breckinridge, and Sextette! She passed away in 1980 at the age of 87.
Important Added Info: Note that what is offered in this auction is a very "risque" greeting card which Mae West sent to her friends in 1933! Miss West (always one to "push the envelope") sent out cards like these to her friends in the 1930s! Each year she would have a completely different card created, and we are currently auctioning this one from 1933 and another one from 1937. The cards were extremely "naughty" by 1930s standards, and only a star of Miss West's magnitude could have gotten away with sending them. This card has an envelope made of silver foil that has a Christmas stocking printed on it, with this poem on the stocking: "Santa's a-knockin' bringing Christmas joy, A well-filled stockin' for a very good boy." Inside of the foil envelope is a card printed on a stiff paper stock that has a completely nude artwork image of Mae West (except for a fancy hat and shoes), and to the lower left of her image is "Merry Christmas" and to the lower right is "Happy New Year", and beneath her image it says "Come Up and See Me Sometime Between the Holidays", and this was a variation on a very naughty joke told by Miss West: "My right leg is Christmas; my left leg is New Year's. Why don't you come up and see me between the holidays."! Our consignor purchased this card and one other many years ago at an auction where they were selling a number of items from Mae West's estate. She purchased a box of random items, and these two cards were in that box, and we are auctioning them in two separate auctions! This card comes with the original blank envelope that it would have been mailed in (this card was never mailed). Also note that this item contains some nudity, so we have placed a white bar over those areas for those who are bothered by such images. Of course, the actual item does not have the white bars.

Condition: very good. The foil envelope has some slight creasing and scuffing on the front. The back has a line of scuffing down the center, but it is solely silver foil on the back with no printing. The interior card with the image of Mae West is in nice condition (see our images).
