She was born in 1868, and was on Broadway in her 20s, and in 1914, starred in "Tillie's Punctured Romance" over a very young Charlie Chaplin; but her career waned and she quit films a few years later returning to Broadway, and by the late 1920s, her career seemed over; but legendary producer Irving Thalberg cast her in "Anna Christie" in 1930, and she rapidly became a major star, in spite of her advanced age and plain face, appearing in many of MGM's greatest movies, as well as a series of very successful comedies; she received the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill in 1930, and is probably best remembered for her role in Dinner at Eight; sadly, she died of cancer in 1934 at the age of 65. Some of her other movies include: The Patsy, Tugboat Annie, Emma (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and The Girl Said No. Note that the items in this lot are mostly from the 1930s. We just don't have the time to check these pressbooks for cuts. Based on the last group of pressbooks we received from this consignor, there is a very good chance that no more than a handful of these pressbooks would have any cuts, and possibly no more than one or two. HOWEVER, DO NOT BID ON THIS BULK LOT UNLESS YOU CAN ACCEPT THAT SOME OF THEM MAY HAVE CUTS! Condition: fair to good, NO CUTS. Note that these were made by MGM during World War II on newsprint, and all are fragile with some tears, darkening, and paper loss around the edges. All the MGM pressbooks from this period are like this, so this is the only way they can be acquired, but bear their significant condition defects in mind before bidding on this lot. Some of the pressbooks were folded and some have separation on the spine and wear around the edges.
