eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result f274a GREAT GUY linen 1/2sh movie poster '36 James Cagney, Mae Clarke Date Sold 4/3/2007Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) Great Guy (released in England as "Pluck of the Irish"), the 1936 John G. Blystone crime thriller ("It's tops in Cagney entertainment"; "James Cagney at his best!"; "From the Johnny Cave Stories in the Saturday Evening Post by James Edward Grant"; about the "New York Department of Weights and Measures", which was in charge of making sure the public didn't get cheated on the weight of goods; Cagney is the brash new head of it, who gets the job after the old head is hospitalized for not "playing ball"; Cagney takes on everyone: the crooks who cheat the public, and the crooked politicians who take bribes to let them do it!) starring James Cagney, Mae Clarke, James Burke, Edward Brophy, and Henry Kolker. Of course, this movie reunited James Cagney with Mae Clarke, the actress that had hit in the face with a grapefruit in Public Enemy! Perhaps this was his way of apologizing to her, by co-starring with her! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good. The poster was heavily creased along both foldlines, with paper loss at the crossfold. There were lots of creases, tears, smudges, and tape stains around the edges of the poster. There was a slightly diagonal 4" tear at the bottom center of the poster. Someone had put tape on the front of that tear, and the tape stain. There were smudges and scuffs in many background areas. It appears there was 1/2" trimmed from the left and right blank borders. Some truly amateur restorer attempted to linenback this poster, and performed "restoration", but it really added nothing to the poster. You can still see all the defects, except some have now been painted over to a slight degree. If I owned this poster with its nice images of Cagney, I would have a talented restorer immediately remove it from its current backing, properly re-back it, and perform the necessary restoration. The resulting poster would look great, although it would have a good amount of restoration along the foldlines, and in the borders. This poster was linenbacked, and it had significant defects which were only somewhat repaired during the linenbacking process, or were not repaired at all (we describe both the defects as well as the quality of the restoration below, and based on those comments, you can easily determine which type of poster it is). You should also look at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!).
